Situated along the Meuse River, 84 km NE of Reims and 14 km SW of the Belgian border, the twin towns of Charleville and Mezieres were united in 1966. The fortifications of the medieval citadel of Mezieres, best seen from avenue de St-Julien, contrast with the Classical town of Charleville, whose centerpiece is place Ducale which echoes place des Vosges in Paris.
