Located 248 miles S of Paris and 110 miles W of Lyon, Clermont-Ferrand was created in the 17th century through the merger of the towns of Clermont and Montferrand. The town is spread out at the foot of the chain of 80 volcanoes called the Chaine des Puys and boasts several attractions for travelers, including well-preserved architecture from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; the daily market (especially good on Saturdays) on place St-Pierre; the nearby Renaissance Amboise Fountain; the Earth and Air Terraces , a monumental sculpture by Etienne Martin located on the Place du 1er Mai, and the 18th-century Neoclassical H tel de Chazerat, built of volcanic stone.
