Cluny

Search Cluny

Located northwest of Macon, Cluny owed its early importance to its famous Benedictine abbey. Founded in 910 by Duke William the Pious of Aquitaine in response to the corruption of the church at the time, the abbey was built into the most powerful monastic foundation in Europe. Its spiritual influence gradually declined, but, today, the abbey serves as the main tourist attraction of Burgundy. Southwest of Cluny, the chapel in Berze-la-Ville is worth a visit, featuring impressive 12th-century frescoes.
