Located on the Charente River, 32 km NW of Angouleme, the small medieval port city of Cognac gives its name to the brandy distilled there since the 18th century. The main reason for a visit to the town is to tour the famous Cognac warehouses, including Martell, Hennessy and Remy-Martin; however, the old town center does contain some well-preserved medieval stone and half-timbered houses.
