Located 37 km north of Rodez, the hillside village of Conques centers around the impressive Abbaye de Ste-Foy. The abbey contains relics of Ste-Foy, a young girl who became an early Christian martyr. Originally housed in a rival monastery in Agen, the relics were stolen in the 9th century by a monk from Conques, securing the abbeys position as an important stop along the route to Santiago de Compostela. The abbey also houses one of the most important collections of western European gold work dating from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
