Dole France |
Located 45 km downstream from Besancon, where the Doubs meets the Rhine-Rhone Canal, Dole has a wonderful concentration of 16th- and 17th-century buildings dating to its golden age as the former capital of the Franche-Comte region. The city's landmark monument is the stone bell tower of Notre-Dame Cathedral, a view of which can be enjoyed from the place aux Fleurs located in the historic center of town. Dole is the departure point to the former fortified town of Poligny, a pretty sight with its towers and church spires.
