The belfry

Search Douai

After climbing 192 steps, visitors can gaze out over the historic town of Douai and the industrial suburbs of the former coalfield from the top platform of the city's famous belfry, 40 meters high. The bells at Douai are well known because its carillon of 62 bells plays a different tune every 15 minutes throughout the day. The belfry is also famous for having appeared in a painting by Corot which is now displayed at the Louvre. The adjoining Town Hall (Hotel de Ville) is open to visitors and has an interesting 15th-century Gothic Council Chamber. Guided tours of the belfry are offered hourly.
