Located 58 km SE of Nancy and 61 km west of Colmar, Epinal is divided into four sections by two arms of the Moselle River. The main town, called the Grande-Ville or the Vieille-Ville, is situated on the east bank of the main channel of the Moselle and contains the Basilica of Saint-Maurice, close to the ancient arcades and historic houses of the place des Vosges. On the west bank of the smaller branch of the river (the Canal des Grands Moulins), lies the Quartier de la Gare, which is divided from the Quartier de Chantraine, located to the far west of the town, by the railroad tracks. The fourth section of the town, the Petite-Ville, is located on an island between the rivers two channels.
