Situated on the Cele River, 71 km east of Cahors, the market town of Figeac contains a well-preserved medieval center featuring wonderful examples of 12th-century architecture and cobbled streets lined with shops. Figeac is also the birthplace of the famous scholar Jean-Francois Champollion, the man who first broke the code of Egyptian hieroglyphics. Place des Ecritures features a modern rendering of the Rosetta stone to celebrate the achievements of Champollion.
