Located 65 km SE of Paris in the forest of Fontainebleau, 3 km from the left bank of the Seine, Fontainebleau is famous for its chateau, one of the largest residences built by the kings of France. A perfect base for royal hunting expeditions, the 12th-century hunting lodge that once existed here was transformed in the 16th century into a sprawling royal palace. The surrounding forest contains a number of walking and cycling trails.
