Situated on a hill overlooking the Nancon River, close to the Breton border, the fortress town of Fougeres is dominated by its 11th- to 15th-century chateau. The castle s 13 towers and 3-meter thick walls hint at its history as an important military stronghold during medieval times. Later, the town served as a source of inspiration for some of the greatest literary masters of France, including Chateaubriand, Balzac and Victor Hugo.
