Paul Gauguin

Search Visit

Considered one of the leaders of French Postimpressionist painting, Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) concentrated on conveying expressiveness through his use of color rather than focusing on realistically portraying the image before him. After spending time with Vincent van Gogh in Arles, Gauguin lived and worked in the South Pacific, capturing the primitive forms and brilliant colors of Tahiti. Gauguin continued to paint colorful images of Polynesian women, images recognized across the globe, until his death in 1903.
