Located along the Saone River, Gray is an ideal place for fishing and water activities. The town also boasts a notable architectural heritage, most notably the Town Hall built in 1568, listed on the National Register of Historical Monuments. The Baron Martin chateau houses a 24-room museum that traces six centuries of occidental art, including paintings by Prudhon. Also of interest are the Notre Dame Basilica, the Esperanto National museum and the 17th-century Paravis tower which opens onto a panoramic view of the Saone valley. Located north of the city, the small town of Champlitte features the interesting Musee des Arts et Traditions Populaires. Housed in a Renaissance chateau, this folk art museum displays artifacts collected by a local shepard in an effort to document disappearing local customs.
