Located N of Strasbourg, Haguenau lies along the Moder River at the edge of the 14,000 hectare Forest of Haguenau. Founded in the 12th century, the town developed around the Hohenstaufen castle and became an imperial city in the mid-13th century. Haguenau later became the second most important Alsatian city, after Strasbourg, during the Middle Ages.
