Located at the confluence of the Sarthe and Huisne rivers, 81 km SW of Tours, Le Mans is famous for its 24-hour car race that occurs every June. However, it has one of the most beautiful old quarters in France. Vieux Mans, the ancient city center, is still surrounded by the original 3rd- to 4th-century Gallo-Roman walls and features half-timbered houses, Renaissance mansions and a number of important religious monuments.
