Located 331 miles SW of Paris and 28 miles SE of Perigueux, Les Eyzies is the base from which to explore the prehistoric painted caves of the Vezere valley. There are four major sites and a smaller cluster of caves located here, including Grotte de Font de Gaume, containing the best display of prehistoric paintings still open to the public; the Grotte des Combarelles, which offers visitors a series of carvings in addition to paintings; Abri du Cap Blanc, containing a life-size frieze of horses and bison, and Rouffignac, with 8 km of caves, some of which are served by an electric train.
