Great-grandson and successor of King Louis XIV, Louis XV was declared king at the age of five, with Philippe II serving as regent. Following the death of Philippe II and the second appointed advisor, Andre Hercule de Fleury, Louis decided not to appoint a chief minister. Efforts to repair an unjust tax system failed and, following the excesses of the court of Louis XV, the fiscal health of the nation was poor. Louis ineffectual reign contributed to the deterioration of royal authority and led to the eventuality of the French Revolution during the reign of his successor, Louis XVI.
