Founded in the mid-19th century, the Lorraine Museum is housed in the former Dukes' Palace, located in the heart of the medieval city. As an introduction to the history of Lorraine, the rooms devoted to archaeology relate what is known about the region from prehistoric times to the Merovingian period. The oldest part of the palace is devoted to medieval and Renaissance sculptures, as well as a famous series of 16th-century tapestries entitled The Sentencing of Banquet. Also on display are copperplate engravings and drawings by Callot, and paintings by Georges de la Tour.
