Located 25 km west of Beziers and 93 km south of Montpellier, the historically rich town of Narbonne is bisected by the Canal de la Robine. To the north, the restored medieval quarter is home to the towns most unusual attraction, the Horreum, a series of underground granaries dating from the 1st century BC when Narbonne was the capital of Romes first colony in Gaul. The huge complex formed by the Palais des Archeveques (Archbishops Palace) and the Cathedrale St-Just et St-Pasteur dominates the center of the town. To the south of the canal there are a number of impressive mansions in addition to the Musee Lapidaire, containing architectural artifacts from Gallo-Roman Narbonne, and the 13th-century Gothic Basilique St-Paul-Serge.
