Poitiers France |
Located high above the Clain and Boivre rivers, just 1-1/2 hours from Paris on the TGV, the regional capital of Poitiers is one of France's oldest cities. Rich in architectural treasures, Poitiers offers visitors a number of interesting sites, including the church of Notre-Dame-la-Grande, an important pilgrimage stop on the medieval route to Santiago de Compostela; the 4th-century St-Jean bapistry, the oldest example of Christian architecture in France; the Gothic cathedral of St-Pierre, and the church of St-Hilaire-le-Grand, its restoration after a fire in the 12th century contributing to its unique combination of styles.
