Pierre-Auguste Renoir (18411919) began his career as an artist with close ties to the Impressionist movement, but, following travels in Algeria and Italy, he moved away from the ideals of Impressionism. Inspired by the works of Italian masters, Renoir began painting in a more formal style and with a darker palette. Eventually confined to a wheel-chair by rheumatism, the artist continued to create works of art until his last years. Renoirs work can be found on display at the Louvre in Paris.
