Located 15 km north of Clermont-Ferrand on the Ambene River, at the western edge of the Limagne Plain, the provincial town of Riom contains black stone Renaissance houses and lava fountains. The town s treasure is the Vierge a l Oiseau, a realistic carving of the Madonna and a young Christ holding a bird in his hands, housed in the 14th-century church of Notre-Dame-de-Marthuret (44 rue du Commerce).
