Located 40 km west of Limoges on the Limousin border, the picturesque town of Rochechouart was established in 965 AD and developed around its chateau, which overlooks the Graine valley. Rochechouarts notoriety lies in an event that happened 200 million years ago, when a meteorite struck the earth 4 km west of the town. While the meteorite disintegrated on impact and time has eroded the crater formed by its impact, evidence of this ancient event can be seen in the towns buildings, where rocks, transformed as a result of the impact of the meteorite, have been used as building materials.
