Located between Bordeaux and La Rochelle at the mouth of the Gironde River, the coastal town of Royan boasts a number of fine beaches, making it a popular resort town during the summer months. Heavily bombed during WWII, the town is a modern one, with an atmosphere unlike its more historically rich neighbors. Seasonal local cruises depart from Royan, including one that visits the nearby Renaissance Cordouan lighthouse.
