Founded by the Genoese in the early 16th century, the fortified city of Sartene rises above the Rizzanese Valley. The city has acquired an international reputation through its annual Catenacciu procession. The oldest Christian ceremony in Corsica, the Catenacciu takes place on Good Friday and features a penitent, barefoot and in chains, dragging a wooden cross through the Old Town in reenactment of Christs journey to Golgotha.
