Situated on the Zorn River and the Marne-Rhine Canal, Saverne offers the only easy route through the Vosges into Alsace -- making it a good base from which to explore the northern Vosges Mountains. Once home to the exiled Catholic prince-bishops of Strasbourg during the Reformation Saverne offers visitors a chance to explore the Chateau des Rohan (place de Gaulle), a favorite summer residence and now home to the Musee de la Ville de Saverne. The nearby Grand'Rue is lined with restaurants and Renaissance houses.
