Senlis is located in a forested area on the Nonette River, a tributary of the Oise, 51 km north of Paris and 10km east of Chantilly. Gallo-Roman walls encircle the well-preserved old town center, which is dominated by the Gothic cathedral of Notre-Dame. Begun in 1155, the cathedral was one of the first churches to be built in the Transitional style. Other points of interest include remnants of a Roman arena, a Roman governors residence, a number of Renaissance-period houses and the early 16th-century royal chateau of Henry IV.
