Located SE of Paris, the city of Sens is named for the Senones, the Gallic tribe who almost captured Rome in 390 BC but were thwarted by a flock of geese who woke the sleeping garrison. The Old Town, situated on the eastern (right) bank of the Yonne River, is contained within a ring of tree-lined boulevards built on the site of the old Roman walls and is dominated by the Cathedrale St-Etienne. Across from the cathedral are the wooden and iron halles, which house the weekly market. The railway station and industrial zone are located on the left bank.
