The medieval village of St-Emilion, 35 km east of Bordeaux, is located in the center of the wine-growing district. The town was named for the 8th-century monk who lived out his life in the roughly hewn cave he carved from the local limestone. His living quarters and the monolithic church dug out of the cliffs after his death by his followers are among the town s attractions.
