Search Saint-Flour

Perched atop a basalt promonotory above the Ander River, the medieval city of Saint-Flour is 92 km west of Le Puy and 92 km south of Clermont-Ferrand. The city developed around the tomb of Saint-Flour, the missionary who came to the area in the 4th century. Ramparts were erected around the city during the 11th century and the 15th-16th centuries marked the city s economic peak. During the 100 Years War, Saint-Flour became a highly coveted location -- many times under siege but, thanks to its ramparts, never conquered. Of particular interest to travelers is the 15th-century Cathedrale St-Pierre, located on the place d Armes, which houses the Black Christ of St-Flour, the only one of its kind in France.
