Search St-Omer

Constructed in 1943 by the Todt organisation, La Coupole (The Dome) was a gigantic underground German base for storing and launching V2 rockets intended to annihilate London at a launching rate of 50 rockets per day. Today, it has been transformed into a unique historical center that immerses the visitor in the atmosphere of this troubled period. After walking through a tunnel, used originally by trains coming from Germany, and underground galleries where rockets were stored, visitors, who are provided with audio headsets, descend by elevator 30 meters beneath the emormous dome. Two exhibitions, using mainly audiovisual techniques combined with newsreel of the period, present the history of the secret German weapons as well as the life of the people living in Northern France from 1940 to 1944. Closed yearly during the first two weeks of January
