Located at the northern foot of the Chaine des Alpilles, 26 km NE of Arles and 19 km south of Avignon, the charming market town of St-Remy is famous as the birthplace of Nostradamus. It is also known for its connection to Van Gogh, who spent a year there at the St-Paul-de-Mausole hospital. However the picturesque town, lined with tree-shaded boulevards, also boasts the remains of a Gallo-Roman settlement. The Site Archeologique de Glanum (Av. Vincent-van-Gogh) contains an arch from the first century BC, foundations of residential buildings and the ruins of a vast mausoleum.
