Built on a steep slope high above a bend in the Durolle River, Thiers has been famous since the Middle Ages for its production of fine cutlery. Still the town s main product, many pieces are on display at the Musee de la Coutellerie (Cutlery Museum; rue de la Coutellerie). Thiers Old Town is filled with 15th- to 17th-century houses, many with elaborately carved facades.
