Toulouse

Located along the Garonne River and the Canal du Midi, 96 km west of Carcassonne, Toulouse is a vibrant metropolis, drawing energy from its more-than-800-year-old university. The capital of France's aeronautics industry, it is a major industrial center, all the while boasting well-preserved monuments of its past. Known as "ville rose" because of its pink-brick buildings, Toulouse is full of architectural grandeur -- its most famous landmark being the multi-towered Romanesque basilica of St. Sernin. The Old Town is centered around the place du Capitole, a vast plaza bordered by the 18th century Hotel de Ville and a number of cafes and specialty food vendors. The town is best explored on foot.
