Located 67 miles NW of Nantes and 57 miles SW of Rennes at the confluence of the two streams which make up the Vanne River, the city of Vannes is located one mile inland from the Gulf of Morbihan. Vieux Vannes, the old city, is surrounded by ramparts built during the 13th-17th centuries. The walls on the eastern side of town are well preserved and can be viewed from the promenade de la Garenne. The city contains a well-preserved medieval quarter, and the old market squares of Vannes are still in use today.
