Located 216 miles S of Paris and 33 miles NE of Clermont-Ferrand on the east bank of the Allier River, Vichy is the chief spa town of France. The town is noted for its sparkling waters, said to have curative properties, and was made popular after frequent visits by Napoleon III. The hotels and baths of Vichy underwent a modernization program during the 1980s. The focal point of the city is the Parc des Sources, featuring covered walks, a turn-of the-century bandstand, shopping centers, the Grand Casino and the Opera House.
