Located just 26 km south of Lyon at the confluence of the Rhone and Gere rivers, Vienne was once an important Roman city and, today, contains one of the largest concentrations of historically important architectural ruins in the Rhone Valley. Points of interest include the Temple dAuguste et Livie (25 BC), located on place du Palais; the Theatre de Cybele ruins, once a Roman temple; the Theatre Romain (7 rue du Cirque), one of the largest Roman amphitheaters in France, seating over 13,000 guests, and the Pyramide du Cirque, once a part of the chariot racetrack.
