Located 6 km east of Nice, the harbor town of Villefranche-sur-Mer is protected by the surrounding hillsides, its waterfront lined with cafes. Points of interest include the medieval Chapelle St-Pierre, restored in 1957 and decorated by Jean Cocteau, and the 16th-century Citadelle St-Elme. Nearby the Fondation Ephrussi de Rothschild, located along the main road to the peninsula of Cap Ferrat, houses a collection of decorative art, paintings and sculpture dating from the 14th to 19th centuries, including items that once belonged to Marie Antoinette and a collection of drawings by Fragonard.
