Americus is located in Sumter County along Highway 280 north Albany in southwestern Gerogia in the Southern Rivers Region of the state. Americus is east of Plains, the hometown of former President Jimmy Carter.It was named after the explorer Amerigo Vespucci and the Habitat for Humanity was founded here.
