Barnesville is located in
Lamar County, of which it is the county seat, northwest of
Macon along Highway 36 near the Tobesofkee River in the
Historic South Region of the state.
Field hospitals were established here during the Civil War that treated casualties from the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain and the Battle of Atlanta.
