Blakely is located in
Early County, of which it is the county seat, just east of the Alabama state line between Hilton and Colomokee along Highway 27 near the Chattahoochee River and the Walter George Reservoir in the
Southern Rivers Region of the state. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 5,722, an increase of 127 since 1990.
It was named after Capt. Johnson Blakely, who was lost at sea in the War of 1812.
