Camilla is located in Mitchell County, of which it is the county seat, and in the Southern Rivers Region of the state. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 5,247, an increase of 123 since 1990. Camilla was the site of massacre in 1868, when white residents fired upon blacks marching into town for a political rally.
