Chatsworth is located in Murray County, of which it is the county seat, north of Atlanta along Highway 411 near Carters Lake and the Chattahoochee National Forest in the Mountains Region of the state. Chatsworth is situated just south of the Tennessee state line. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 4,544, an increase of 1,679 since 1990. Some say the town was named after a railroad official; others that it was named for a sign that fell off a railroad freight car.
