Located on State Street, this house was built in 1815-20 by Isaiah Davenport. In 1955 a group of citizens saved the building, which had become a tenement, from being replaced by a parking lot. Their efforts marked the beginning of the city's concern with preservation. The finely proportioned Federal house is noted for its American and English period furnishings, delicate ironwork, elliptical stairway and handsome plasterwork.
