Forsyth is located in Monroe County, of which it is the county seat, just northwest of Macon along Highway 83 near the Ocmulgee River in the Historic South Region of the state. Forsyth is just west of the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge.
Its named after John Forsyth, governor, senator and secretary of state.
