Fort Gaines is located in Clay County, of which it is the county seat, west of Albany along Highway 37 on the banks of the Chattahoochee River near the Alabama state line in the Southern Rivers Region of the state. Located just 3 miles from the Walter George Dam. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,271, an increase of 23 since 1990. Fort Gaines was named after Gen. Edmund Pendleton Gaines and was once a major cotton shipping center.
