Gainesville

Gainesville is located in Hall County, of which it is the county seat, on the shore of Lake Sidney Lanier along Highway 129 in the Mountains Region of the state.

Confederate Gen. James Longstreet moved here after the Civil War and opened a hotel. During Prohibition, mountain moonshiners prospered; Gainesville became a supply point for sugar, glass containers and fast cars.
