Griffin is located in Spalding County, of which it is the county seat, in the Southern Rivers Region of the state. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 21,052, a decrease of 273 since 1990. It was named after Gen. Lewis Lawrence Griffin, president of the Monroe Railroad. Well-known residents have included Doc Holliday, gunslinger and Wyomia Tyus, track and field athlete, Olympic medallist.
