Hartwell is located in
Hart County, of which it is the county seat, just west of the South Carolina state line along Highway 29 on the banks of the
Savannah River near Hartwell Lake in the
Mountains Region of the state. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 4,841, an increase of 286 since 1990.
Hartwell was named after Nancy Hart, Revolutionary War heroine.
