Hiawassee is located in
Towns County, of which it is the county seat, northeast of
Atlanta between Young Harris and Clayton along Highway 75 near Lake Chatuge in the
Mountains Region of the state. Situated on the North Carolina state line.
Hiawassee's name derives from the Cherokee term for "meadow".
